- Judges 21:25 (ESV)
What is a Sick Society? The very last verse in the book of Judges gives the answer as to why societies become sick. The reason why societies become sick is because people reject authority and do whatever they want to do. In other words, a sick society is one with no absolutes.
This being said, a sick society is a group of people who have corrupted God’s absolutes. The corruption comes as a result of ignoring absolutes given by God. A sick society, therefore, is any group of people who corrupt God’s standard of holiness by ignoring absolutes given to them by God.
As to a society, God judges based upon whether or not that society obeys God’s absolutes. A society can be blessed by obeying God but if the society stops obeying, it can be lost. Societies can only experience continual blessing by continually obeying God.
Sometimes the sickness is difficult to see while at other times the sickness parades about in broad day light. For most of human history, societies become ill quickly. One only needs to read the third chapter of Genesis to see how quickly the first society became ill. I bring no new revelation when I claim that most societies of this present world are sick. In addition, most Christians would heartily agree with my claim that these sick societies openly and proudly display their sickness for all to see.
Sick societies are never acceptable in God’s eyes. They offend Him. Although God loves the people of these unhealthy communities, there comes a point at which He reaches the end of His patience. The Bible offers many illustrations of God exercising much patience with a group of people…to a certain point. When that point is reached, God delivers judgment.
