Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
- John 14:6 (ESV)
If believers wish to follow Jesus, truth must be the rule rather than the exception. Lies are a product of the devil.
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
- John 8:44 (ESV)
Did you hear what Jesus says about lying? Deception is the devil’s desire. It is the adversary’s home. Lying is of the character of Satan. It is who he is. This attribute holds no rightful place within a child of God.
What is a lie? I believe John Gill gives a great definition.
“…a lie is a voluntary disagreement of the mind and speech, with a design to deceive; it is to speak that which is false, contrary to truth shining in the mind; and it is spoken knowingly and willingly…”
- John Gill
What is the danger of deception? The danger of deception is separation from good. A lie told to one looking for safety directions that seeker into peril. As members of the human race, Christians must direct the world to the safety of the truth of the gospel of Jesus. As members of the Church, believers must point fellow brothers and sisters to the continued safety of God’s word. Therefore the Church must embrace truth and reject lies.
Deception is from the old man. Since believers are called to remove the old man, lying must be removed too.
