1. What or who do you worship?
God told the nation of Israel not to have any other gods before Him (Exodus 20:3). Although we may associate “gods” with totems, trinkets, and statues, a god is anything you honor more than God Himself. Today, people honor things like entertainment, sports, education, sex, and wealth rather than Jesus Christ. How about you? What takes highest honor in your heart?
2. What do you hold to tightly?
The apostle Paul writes that whatever earthly gain he possessed he willingly gave up for the sake of Christ (Philippians 3:7, 8). Earthly stuff is cool and even handy…but it will not last. All of our physical possessions are destined to return to dust. Even if your possessions should outlast you, they will not benefit you.
The offer Jesus Christ makes is to turn to Him for eternal things. He offers eternal life, eternal joy, eternal pleasure, and even eternal relationships. All of these things come through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ to the one who values Jesus. How does one value Jesus? It begins by valuing what Jesus did for humanity. Observe His work on our behalf.
His life was righteous before a holy God. He offers His righteousness to sinful people. Sin against God requires a payment of death. Jesus paid that payment in full for all people. God showed His approval of Christ’s work by raising Jesus from the dead.
There are many great people and things of this earth but only one person lived, died, and rose from the dead so that sins could be forgiven and eternal life could be made possible. That one person is Jesus Christ. His worth surpassed the worth of anything or anyone else.
