- Ephesians 4:1-6
There exists a unity between believers in Jesus Christ. This unity finds its basis in Christ and transcends all aspects of human relation. Unity between believers transcends nationality, societal position, and gender (Galatians 3:26-29). In Christ, Christians are unified into one body. Each member of the body stands as a child of God and heirs according to the promise of eternal life in Christ.
Unity between believers comes from Christ. Christians become one under the headship of Jesus. Each member of the unified body receives a calling. The calling involves adoption as God’s own children, forgiveness of sin, and eternal life with God Himself.
God’s children manifest their unity as they live out their calling in Christ. Living out the calling means a life of submission to the will of the Lord Jesus. As each Christian comes into this submission, the body lives out the reality of its unity in Christ. The church then works as “one new man” or “one body” which is as God desires (Ephesians 2:14-18).
Thus, God’s people (the Church) are in reality, one body. The Bible describes the Church as the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:27). Each child of God makes up a part of Christ’s body. The body of Christ is one although made up of many parts (I Corinthians 12:12, 20). As a physical human body is unified so is the body of Christ.
I conclude from Scripture that Christians are united into one body. As members of the body of Christ, each Christian is given a role (ministry) in the building up of the body. Therefore every believer is connected to every other believer. Christ’s church is not designed to be disjointed and separate but rather connected and unified.
