- I Peter 3:7
God is the head of every believer (the church). In His plan, God sets the husband as the head of the household. Many take this “headship” of the man as meaning a kind of authoritarian rule. Nothing could be further from the truth. Just as the wife is to submit to the husband, I believe that God sets up the husband’s headship to be one of submission.
How is the husband to lead submissively? He is to first submit to Jesus Christ as Lord. As I mention before, the husband sets the spiritual tone for the home. God desires that the man of the house remain ever yielding to the Scriptures. As the man submits to God, he can then lead his family in the right direction.
The husband must also submit to his wife. I believe this is the meaning of the word “likewise” in verse seven. The husband is to submit just as the wife is to submit. The husband submits to his wife by loving her in a sacrificial manner (Ephesians 5:25). The sacrificial manner is to be as Jesus loved the church. How did the Lord love the church? Jesus gave His life for the church. So too should the husband love his wife. The love spoken of here means that the husband deny self to do what is best for his wife.
