That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

This confession is not to be thought of as some admission void of heart. It is a confession which comes from the absolute conviction of the gospel’s reliability. In other words, this confession that Jesus is Lord is made because one believes that Jesus is the Son of God who came to die for man and was resurrected from the dead by God. This type of confession is made by assurance of God’s word rather than from mechanical ritual. Therefore the early church took Jesus’ lordship seriously and so must today’s Church.
