- Matthew 1:18 (NKJV)
The birth of Jesus brought potential danger for Mary. Under Jewish law, the penalty for a woman who became pregnant before her wedding night was either divorce or execution. Thus, Mary's response to the news that she would conceive a child before her marriage ceremony was a bit interesting. Here was her reply.
"I am the Lord’s servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.
- Luke 1:38 (NIV)
Mary's response to the news that she would carry this child was not one of fear but of faith. The young girl submitted to God's plan for her life. Despite the threat of ridicule and death, this young lady relied upon God.
The proper response when God calls us is to submit to His call. We submit not because we understand God's plan or because we know the final outcome of our part. We submit to God because we trust Him. We depend upon Him to guide us. We rely upon God to see us through the work to which He calls us.
Our full comprehension of God's call on our lives does not matter. Our faithful response to Him matters greatly.
