Paul states that there were some who troubled the churches in Galatia. The trouble came because of a perversion of the true gospel. Anytime the gospel is perverted, the outcome is nothing good. The reason why is very clear. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the truth from God. Anything other than the gospel as it is laid out in God’s word leads people away from the truth. When people are lead away from God’s truth, they are in great danger. They are in danger because they are deceived away from the blessing God wishes to give. Without God’s blessing, people suffer.
God desires good for people. Jesus’ death and resurrection opens the way for people to receive all the blessing mentioned earlier from Ephesians. God’s word directs people into how to receive His blessing. Any perversion of God’s directions leads people away from the blessings of the Almighty. Condemnation is upon the one deceiving people in such a manner.
Galatians 1:8 But if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you contrary to what we preached to you, he is cursed.
What does God say about those who teach a false gospel? He says that such people are cursed. This is a serious statement. The gospel is not something to be handled lightly or incorrectly. God is so serious about this curse that He states again in verse nine.
Galatians 1:9 As we said before, I say now again: If anyone evangelizes you contrary to that which you received, he is cursed.
Of someone who teaches a false gospel, John Gill writes:
“…let him be ejected from the ministry of the word, degraded from his office, and cast out of the church; let him be no more a minister, nor a member of it; and let him be abhorred of men, and accursed of Christ…” (Gill)
The idea of being cursed is to be devoted to destruction (Barnes). Such is the destiny of anyone who continues to teach a false gospel. The Church’s proper response to false teachers is to have nothing to do with their teaching. Certainly the Christ-like character is to evangelize false teachers for they reside under condemnation but again I say that Christians must not accept false teaching.
I encourage the Church to take Galatians 1:8, 9 to heart. God’s gospel is to be taught accurately. Bible teachers must make sure they are teaching correct doctrine. Churches must demand correct doctrine from their teachers. The gospel of Jesus must be honored and proclaimed.
