1. The Church should never stop loving the disobedient Christian. This is the Lord’s command to His people (John 13:34). Many people believe that loving another means accepting their behavior. This is not the Biblical definition of love. Biblical love is respectful but it does uphold God’s standards. These standards are found within the pages of the Bible.
2. The Church should seek restoration. Homosexuality is a sin and contrary to Biblical behavior for a Christian (I Timothy 1:9, 10). When a Christian falls into sin, the proper response is for the Church to reach out and attempt to restore. The pattern for this restoration is found in Scripture (Matthew 18). If a brother or sister in Christ chooses not to repent after an extensive effort is made to restore, the wayward Christian is to be treated like a heathen. How should the Church treat heathens? We should share the gospel with them.
3. The Church cannot accept the disobedient Christian’s behavior. Beeching states that Jesus taught a radical message of welcome, inclusion, and love. I agree, but the Bible also tells us that Jesus welcomes sinners to receive washing from sin. The Lord includes sinners into His arms so that they will be free from sin, not so they may continue in their sin. Jesus’ love for all people is shown by dying for their sin. Through His life death and resurrection, people no longer need be enslaved by their sin.
Beeching notes the pain of people rejecting her work as a result of her announcement. I am sure she is experiencing pain and rejection. The Church should be suspect of the fruit of a Christian who chooses disobedience to a Biblical lifestyle. I am a church leader. If I decided to begin living disobediently to God’s word, it would be appropriate for the Church to look at with me with suspicion. This is because people who hold public positions within the Church are to be held to a high standard. The fruit of their ministry comes from the condition of their heart. If the heart is sinful, the ministry becomes tarnished.
My hope and prayer is that Vicky Beeching repents of her homosexuality. She can still be used of God.
