- I John 5:13 (NKJV)
The final sign of spiritual life that I mention is the sign of faith. John writes clearly that those people who believe in the name of Jesus Christ have eternal life. But what does it mean to believe in the name of the Son of God?
To “believe in” is the same as having faith in someone or something. Faith is a dependence or reliance upon someone or something. Therefore to believe in Jesus’s name means to rely upon Jesus to take away sin and to give eternal life.
This dependence or reliance comes from assurance (substance) in the promise of the gospel. It stems from a fixed trust (conviction) in the claims of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 11:1). When someone mentally agrees with the gospel of Jesus Christ, the natural response is to ask Jesus for the salvation He offers (Romans 10:13). This is Biblical faith. This is “believing in Jesus”.
If one has believed in Jesus for salvation, one has the assurance or guarantee of salvation. This was what John was writing to his audience.
Upon what is this guarantee based? The guarantee is based upon the very word of God (Genesis 15:6; John 3:16; Acts 16:31).
