- Judges 2:1-6 (ESV)
Israel sinned against God by failing to clean the land (Judges 1:27-36). The result was just as God said would happen: the pagan nations corrupted God’s people. God’s people forsook the Lord and adopted the ways of the sinful nations (Judges 2:11-15). The problem was an acceptance of evil.
An acceptance of standards below God’s standard makes societies sick. Sadly the United States is guilty of accepting evil. We are a sick society. It pains me to lay much of the blame for our sick society upon the shoulders of God’s people rather than upon those outside the church. Unbelievers can do nothing but accept and practice sin but it should not be the same among God’s redeemed. The acceptance of evil by God’s people infects the United States.
How has the church in the United States contributed to the sickness (corruption) of a society? Allow me to make a list of suggestions. God’s church is guilty of:
Leaving her first love (Christ) (Rev. 2:4)
This is evidenced by relinquishing our responsibility to care for widows and orphans to the government.
Adopting unbiblical teaching (Rev. 2:14, 15)
Some churches have abandoned making disciples and teaching them to obey the doctrine of Jesus.
Being corrupt (Rev. 2:20)
This is evidenced by a life of sexual impurity and idolatry.
Being dead (Rev. 3:1)
Some churches do not have nor do they welcome God’s Spirit. They are not spiritually alive.
Lukewarm (Rev. 3:15, 16)
Some Christians rest in their salvation without making effort to be on fire for God.
Do any of the five items listed above hit you particularly hard? Is God’s Spirit convicting you of guilt? There is great hope! Repent and walk upon the path of the Master. Here are some specifics:
Love God with your whole being and your neighbor as yourself.
Preach the Word in and out of season.
Confess and forsake sin. When you sin again, confess and forsake that sin again.
Call upon the name of the Lord for salvation. If you are unsure whether or not you are saved, make sure.
Listen to and answer God’s call. Use your spiritual gifts. How do you find those gifts? God will give you a desire to serve Him. Give in to those desires and you will be using your gifts.
