- I Peter 3:3, 4
In God’s eyes, the inner man always takes precedence over the outer (I Samuel 16:7). What is this inner man? Since every individual possesses an inner man, it is of utmost importance that we know.
The inner man is the heart of a person. It is the eternal soul of the human being. It is the portion of an individual which goes on beyond the death of the physical body. The external man is the physical portion of the human being. In contrast, the inner man is the spiritual or unseen part of a man or woman.
The Lord Jesus came to die for sinners. Sinners are made up of both an outer and an inner man. Therefore the sacrifice of Jesus affects both the spiritual and the physical portion of man. Jesus’s work cleanses the soul of sin and will someday restore the body to perfection. But the physical body, absent of a cleansed soul, in no way benefits the individual. Thus, as for life here on earth, it is of greater importance to adorn the inner man.
