- Galatians 1:8 (NKJV)
The gospel of Jesus Christ allows no room for erroneous teaching. If the Church strays from the gospel as it is presented in the Bible, great consequences ensue.
The first consequence of proclaiming a gospel which lies outside of the Biblical text is that of deception. A false gospel directs people away from the Jesus who can truly save from sin. Presenting a non-Biblical gospel to the unsaved leads them into placing faith in a non-Biblical Jesus. Faith which rests upon a false Jesus is not saving faith but is a trust which leads one to remain in an unredeemed state. Put simply, a false gospel can only offer a false Jesus and faith in a false Jesus means that no transfer from death to life takes place.
My conviction is that one reason why many who profess faith in Jesus never experience a change of heart and lifestyle is due to the fact that they believe in the wrong Jesus. They believe in a wrong Jesus because they are given and receive a false gospel.
A second consequence of teaching a false gospel is accursedness. The word “accursed” in Galatians 1:8 means to be devoted to destruction. Those who teach a false Christ have more than likely trusted in a false Christ. If this is the case, they possess no eternal life and are headed for destruction. If a true believer teaches a false gospel, they would also face judgment from God though they would be saved. In either case, judgment is reserved for the one who teaches a non-Biblical gospel.
Here is my point. The Church must make sure that the true gospel of Jesus Christ be proclaimed. This requires that the Church know the gospel.
What is the gospel of Jesus Christ? I agree with Charles Spurgeon in that the gospel of Jesus Christ begins in Genesis and ends in Revelation. In other words, the Jesus that saves is only the Jesus who is revealed in Scripture. This Biblical Jesus is the One the Church must proclaim. The Jesus of the Bible is the only Jesus who can save sinners. It is by God’s grace through faith in this Biblical Jesus that people are transferred from death to life.
