- Galatians 3:24 (NASB)
Many people try to “do” to earn God’s favor. But the Bible says that nothing we do is good enough to get God to love us. No action of mankind holds the righteousness needed to earn anything from God.
Why, then, did God give the Ten Commandments? God gave the Law to man to show His absolute, holy standard. When men tried to follow God’s standard, they found that they could not keep it because of their sinfulness. The Law was a teacher to instruct people about their inability to be good enough for God.
The Law teaches people that they need someone else to be good for them. That someone else is Jesus Christ. Jesus fulfills the Law as the sacrifice for sin. He is the One who did what was needed to earn God’s favor. Jesus’ works are good enough.
Therefore what God calls people to do to be righteous is to depend upon the works of Jesus. When we rely upon what Jesus did (His death and resurrection), His righteousness is applied to our lives. Our sins are forgiven and we have eternal life.
Are you trying to do something to receive God’s favor? Stop trying to work and rely upon Jesus to receive God’s favor.
