On the way to give the message, Rickenbacker’s plane, a B-17 Flying Fortress, ran out of fuel and crashed…in the vast Pacific ocean. The crash began a twenty-four day journey of survival on life rafts.
On the eighth day, Rickenbacker had dozed off with his hat pulled down over his eyes. He awakened to a sea gull standing on his head. The crew of the B-17 stranded with Rickenbacker also saw the gull. The gull meant food and a chance at survival.
The bird remained on Rickenbacker’s head until he was able to grab it. Rickenbacker sacrificed the bird and the crash survivors had their needed meal. (Rickenbacker, 1967)
God promises provision. Even in the most dire situations, God amazingly provides.
