- John 10:27-30
These words of Jesus should be of great comfort to Christians. The Lord clearly states that the salvation of the believer is a never-ending thing. It is His gift to those who depend upon Him for eternal life. When Jesus says, “…and they shall never perish…”, He means what He says. Believers are given a beautiful gift of life that is eternal. This life has no ending. Christians are held by both the Son and the Father. They are safe-forever.
How could it be that the Christian’s salvation is eternally secure? It is so because the Christian’s salvation is based upon the finished work of Jesus. That is the power of the Savior. Salvation begins when a person rests in Jesus Christ to save him or her from sin. The continuance of salvation (aka the Christian life) is just as reliant upon the work of Christ. Just as no amount of our own good works can save us, no amount of our own good, Christian efforts can keep us saved. Jesus saves His people and keeps them safe.
The response to this truth is for people to rely upon Christ. For some it is an initial dependence upon the Savior for salvation. For those who have already trusted in Christ for forgiveness of sin, it means that they live in a continued rest in Christ. Christians rest in Christ by hearing His voice (aka the Bible) and following Him.
