- 2 Timothy 4:2 (NKJV)
Influence is a powerful thing. Influence is the ability to affect others. It stirs up hearts and minds and is a true agent of change.
God empowers believers with tools with which they may influence their world. One of these tools is the Bible. God’s word affects people down to their very core being.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
- Hebrew 4:12 (NIV)
Why is the Bible so powerful? The Bible holds so much influence because it is the written word of God. It is literally the very breath of God recorded for people to read and re-read. Such an influential tool must be put to good use.
How can Christians use God’s word to influence? The apostle Paul writes that believers must proclaim the word. The word “preach” here means to publish or speak openly. So then Christians may exert great influence upon their world by simply speaking openly what the Bible says.
Christians must proclaim God’s word with gentleness and respect. This means that we must do so with love. We proclaim the word with love by firmly telling the truth of the Bible without bitterness or hatred toward others. Communicating the word of God must include understanding and compassion for people. We communicate best when we also listen to those to whom we speak.
