- Romans 14:21 (NKJV)
Christians have a lot of liberty. For this we can be grateful. But in our liberty, we must remember love. If we engage in an activity that, even though not prohibited by the Bible, weakens another Christian’s faith, it is best to not engage in that activity.
For example, contrary to what many believe, the Bible does not prohibit alcoholic beverages. The Bible does prohibit drunkenness. Therefore, Christians have the liberty of partaking in such beverages without violating Scripture. But if my drinking an alcoholic beverage makes another Christian stumble (i.e. drink to the point of drunkenness), I have not loved my brother as I should. A loving response would be to do nothing that makes another Christian sin or weak.
Love always trumps liberty. If something we do hurts another’s faith, may we have the sensitivity and love to lay down our liberty for the sake of the brethren.
