- Matthew 5:3 (ESV)
There is a joy in understanding how bad we are. I do not mean that people must relish in their evil and sinful ways. What I do mean is that once the human heart comes to an understanding of its own evil, it steps closer to the kingdom of heaven.
A poor spirit is one which receives a clear view of just how much evil resides within. It is a spirit which breaks under the heavy weight of sin. This broken spirit comes to the end of the road and acknowledges that nothing good resides inside; that any hope of self-redemption is lost. If, at this point of self-loathing, the poor spirit reaches up to Christ, happiness comes.
Happiness comes because God forgives poor spirits. It is those people who know how bad they really are whom God delights to drench in His grace. In God’s mercy, sinners become saints, poor become rich, and the sick become whole. This is the blessedness of the poor in spirit to whom the kingdom of God belongs.
Are you a sinful sinner? Are you a rebellious saint? Accept the pain of your evil. Let it break you so that you have nowhere else to go but to reach for the Savior, Jesus Christ. I assure you that your poor spirit will be a blessing.
