- Romans 8:29, 30
What does it mean to be called according to God’s purpose? I believe we find the answer in verses twenty-nine and thirty.
Called people are known by God. Specifically, they are “known before”. The Greek word used is that from which we get our English word “prognosis”. Prognosis means a forecast-a seeing before an event. With man, a forecast is unsure and fallible. When God forecasts, He pre-sees things perfectly and accurately every time.
I believe what “knew beforehand” means here is that God pre-saw those who would be saved. God is omniscient which means He knows everything. In His omniscience, God knows who will and who will not belong to Him. How far back does God’s pre-knowledge go? His knowledge runs to infinity past. Thus, His knowledge of us really has no beginning. He just knows. I submit a verse from Ephesians to get you thinking about God’s knowledge of you.
…just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love…
