- Galatians 1:8 (NKJV)
I cannot tell you how many times I have encountered people who are confused about the gospel of Jesus Christ. Although I submit that the gospel includes the whole of the Bible, I limit “gospel” here to the specifics of God’s plan of salvation to man.
The gospel’s details are simple. Paul gives these details to us.
3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures…
- I Corinthians 15:3, 4 (NKJV)
The wonderful truth about the gospel centers around what God did for people:
1. Jesus died to pay for humanity’s sin.
2. Jesus was buried.
3. Jesus rose from the dead.
Through these actions, God makes salvation possible for all people. Nothing else needs to be done to pay for sins. Jesus Christ is the One who did all the work.
Because the complete work of salvation rides upon the shoulders of Jesus, man can do nothing to be saved. Any attempt for man to “do” something to receive salvation is an offense to God, a sin in and of itself.
So the gospel tells us man’s proper response to the work of Jesus. Man’s proper response is to trust in what Jesus did for us. Trusting Jesus means we stop trying to work to be saved and begin to rely upon the saving work of Christ. There is no work on man’s part but only dependence upon Christ.
To teach people to do anything else in order to be saved distorts the gospel. Distorting the gospel is serious business. Paul says anyone who teaches another gospel is accursed.
