- I Samuel 1:11 (NKJV)
The godly woman, Hannah, understood the One responsible for Samuel’s birth. The One responsible was God. God, in His sovereignty, closed Hannah’s womb and in His choice, opened her womb. God was the only reason why Hannah became a mom. Samuel came from God and was a gift to Hannah from God. As such, Hannah treats Samuel as belonging to God from the moment she prayed to have a son. Samuel did not belong to Hannah but to God. This faithful woman holds onto her son with a loose grip and when the time came, she gave him to the Lord.
Hannah’s perspective is the correct perspective when it comes to the things we possess. This is true because we really do not possess anything. Everything we have comes from God and therefore ultimately belongs to God. If we sink this truth into our hearts and minds, giving becomes so much easier.
The burden of holding onto “stuff” gets lifted from our shoulders when we take on Hannah’s perspective. In trust, we can live life holding onto the things we have with a loose grip. There is a freedom in living like that. The freedom comes because we live outside of the control of our stuff and within the control of God. We live not as slaves to things that are destined to decay but as slaves to our wonderful, loving God; the one who is the real owner of things.
As He instructs us to give, we may simply respond to the Master of freedom by allowing Him to remove from our hand anything He desires to take. We can respond this way in peace knowing that because He owns it all, He gives all things to us as we need.
