- Matthew 5:8 (NASB)
Matthew Henry says that the characteristic of heart purity is the most comprehensive characteristic of happy people. I agree. I suggest that without purity of heart, no happiness really exists. I suggest this because only pure hearts know God. Knowing God is the only true happiness.
How does a pure heart come? It does not come from within the individual but from God Himself. Pure hearts are those hearts which have been touched by God’s grace. They are hearts once dead made alive by the Almighty.
These are hearts called by the Father and drawn to Jesus through the compulsion of the Holy Spirit. These hearts hear God’s call and respond to the mercy offered through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These hearts, with the help of God, reach out in trust to call upon the Savior and request the forgiveness of sin. These hearts are washed with the blood of the Savior and are now acceptable to come into the presence of the Father. They beat now under the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit so that their rhythm matches that rhythm of the Most High God. This is the pure heart of which Jesus speaks.
Only the pure in heart are destined to see God. No other heart can stand before the God of Abraham. The promise of seeing God is graciously offered to all who will submit to the Son of God. Is your heart pure? You cannot make it pure under your strength. Trust the Savior to give you a pure heart.
